Portrait of a Young Girl with a Fan

A Young Girl with a Fan by Pietro Rotari, probably painted in the 1750's (I have searched and searched, but I couldn't find the year, so this is a mere guess. Please inform me, if anyone knows the exact year.)

  2. This is just beautiful. I love the glow of her face and the touches of my favorite blue on the dress. I'm so glad you posted this...I have never seen it before.
Ninon, You are right about Robinson Crusoe. I didn't think it was a children's book but it was shelved in the children's section and so I doubted myself. I shouldn't have - I used to sell children's books!
Will visit you on my return. Have a lovely week.

  4. Dear Catherine,

Yes, I agree with you :) Rotari is one of my grand favourites, I love his portraits of young girls.
I've also always seen Robinson Crusoe only in the children's section. It's quite interesting, because then you have Gulliver's Travels, which also was a book read by adults in the 18th century, and today it is too considered a children's book. And then you have Choderlos Laclos' Dangerous Liaisons, which is not (probably because of the theme), so I suppose one can't really say that 18th century literature was on the same level as children's books are today. Are we perhaps dealing with the same merry regression as with the Harry Potter-books? :) Maybe people in the future will be surprised that many adults read them today. And then we have Winnie the Pooh, also written for adults in the beginning, and today it's a children's classic...

  5. Most expressions during this time period lack a smile, but this is very unusual. You can see the mischievous ploy in her expression. It's lovely.
